Mission
Community starts at the table. We can find common ground across generations and cultures through our love for the game of mahjong. Our goal is to create opportunities for connection and understanding in an inclusive space that recognizes our shared humanity.
Origins
Common Ground began with a single table in a parking lot. I was obsessed with mahjong after I first learned how to play back in 2024, so I wanted to play the game wherever and whenever I could – even if it meant bringing my own set, table, and stools everywhere I went.
One thing led to another, and now Common Ground has become my means to provide a space in which connections can begin. As someone who grew up a painfully lonely kid, I know what it’s like to be on the outskirts, wanting so badly to fit in somewhere. I hope that Common Ground can help you find your people.
Let’s make the best out of every hand that fate deals us, just like in mahjong, and create the kind and loving world that our future generations deserve.
In love and solidarity always,
J. Zhao
